“I had my prize at my side, Jasper. I was inclined to give the loser his pyrrhic victory.”
“But you are reconsidering his actions in the light of what you have heard?”
“He was intimidated by me for some reason, but I do not think that was an oft felt emotion for him. I think he is the sort of man to use his religious fervour to intimidate, dominate and control others. “
“I see. Yes, I can imagine… And you think he held this kind of power over…”
“All of them. Swan, Genevieve, the girls – Sarah.”
“Perhaps Genevieve made a promise to Black that she would never speak…”
“And she took it literally…”
“And he was always there to reinforce the threat. The fiend!”
Jasper’s exclamation is out of character for him. That he came to the same conclusion as I, as quickly as he did, reinforces its strength.
“We need to persuade Genevieve to speak. She could shed so much more light on the situation,” he says.
“Do you think, with your training, you could overcome his teaching? His threats?”
My brother rubs his chin. “I suppose there is one way to find out.”
“Agreed. Shall we?” As we turn towards the house I sling my arm around my brother’s shoulders. He has filled out recently.

“Carlisle told me that you’ve started sparring with Jake. You thinking of fighting again?”

I was incredibly relieved when it was time to take her home.

“Well, duh, ’cause you’re super-hot, why else? I mean, geez, Edward, you’re practically a Greek god! I’ve been wanting to get in your pants since last semester.”

I press pause on one of the photos in order to have a closer look at it.
It’s a picture of Kate, one I had taken of her in my parents backyard. The sun was setting behind her; the soft hues of orange, gold and pink is a sight to behold.
Yet it’s the smile on her face and the sparkle in her eyes that makes the photo breath-taking.
I stare at the picture for God knows how long, then spring off the couch and stroll towards the television.
I lower myself on the floor, get down on my knees and extend out my hand towards the screen. I place my palm against Kate’s image and sigh sadly.
“Happy Birthday beautiful.” I whisper as more tears travel past my cheeks and spill over my chin.
I’m unable to bring myself to visit her plot at Garden Lake today.
I’m too broken, drained and grief-stricken to leave the house. And don’t forget selfish!
I’m sorry Kate, so very sorry.
That bottle of whiskey in the kitchen is calling to me right now.
